Nova Southeastern University Accreditation Details
Nova Southeastern is accredited overall by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award degrees ranging in level from associates to doctoral. In addition, the Fischler College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) covering initial teacher preparation and advanced educator preparation courses offered both on the various campuses and through online learning.
Application Requirements
Prospective students seeking to enter college as freshmen will need to begin with submitting either the university's specific application or the Common Application, along with a $50 application fee. Official transcripts are then forwarded either electronically or by mail by a counselor at the student's previous school. One recommendation letter is also required and can be from either a teacher or a counselor that knows the student well. Additional recommendations, up to a total of three, may be forwarded but are not required.
Finally, prospective freshmen students should submit official scores from either the SAT or the ACT. Students applying via the Common Application must also have their counselor complete the School Report found on the Common Application website. This report can be submitted along with the official transcripts.
Students seeking to transfer as an undergraduate need to follow much the same requirements as freshmen applicants, with the exception of the need for recommendations. In this case, official transcripts must include all previous college coursework, and test scores for the SAT or ACT may be required only if the student has not yet earned 24 or more college credit hours prior to transferring.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergraduate students choosing to attend traditional daytime classes are assessed a flat rate tuition fee of $14,490 per semester for the fall and winter semesters and for a full-time schedule of 12 to 18 credit hours. Otherwise, tuition is assessed at $966.00 per credit hour. Additional fees apply for books and materials, student fees, and any course specific fees that may be required.
Tuition rates at the graduate level are dependent on the particular course of study chosen. For graduate students within the Fischler College of Education, amounts range from $810.00 per credit hour for the Education Leadership program to $955.00 per credit hour for both the Master of Science in Education program and the Education Specialist program. Doctoral level students in this college pay either $1,260 per credit hour for the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) program or $1,545 per credit hour for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program.
Financial aid is available to all eligible students through scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs. Students are encouraged to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, as soon as possible after applying for college courses. The financial aid office can then determine the exact level of need for each applicant and arrange for disbursements.
Degrees in Education Offered
Nova Southeastern University offers several options for earning a degree in Education, beginning with the Bachelor of Science degree in either Elementary Education or Exceptional Student Education. The Elementary Education degree includes both ESOL and Reading Endorsements, while the Exceptional Student degree includes only the ESOL endorsement.
In each case, a total of 120 credit hours is required for completion of the four year degree. This total includes 30 credit hours of general education requirements and 24 credit hours applied toward electives. The remaining credit hours are used to satisfy the core classes for the major and the endorsements involved. In both cases, students will also demonstrate that Florida state requirements for the field of education and teaching have been met.
Students seeking a more advanced or more specialized degree should consider graduate work within the College of Education. Graduate students can seek an advanced degree in both of the areas taught at the undergraduate level, as well as a Master of Science in a wide variety of specializations, including Education Leadership, Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology, and secondary education for a variety of subject areas, the most popular being Science, Spanish, and Mathematics.
At the graduate level, students can also earn an Education Specialist degree (Ed.S) in a wide variety of specialization areas. This degree path is most useful for students already in a teaching field who want to gain more advanced knowledge and training in their area of specialization while taking courses toward recertification or who are looking to add a new area of certification to their repertoire. In this degree area, the most popular choices are once again in Mathematics instruction, Educational leadership, and Curriculum Instruction Management and Administration.

In each case, doctoral students will complete coursework that includes advanced research techniques and completion of a dissertation as requirements toward the degree.
Regardless of specific interests in the field of education, Nova Southeastern has a program to meet the needs of both future and current educators in a wide range of specializations and areas. Students seeking to become teachers of any sort can begin with the undergraduate degree in the subject of their choice or in elementary education overall, while those seeking to either enter teaching at a more advanced level or to further already existing careers can choose programs at the graduate level. Nova Southeastern University offers the flexibility and availability of campus locations and online options to meet the needs of most, if not all, applicants seeking Education degrees.
